Actives Speak Louder Than Words
SOPHYTO’s formulas contain literally hundreds and hundreds of naturally occurring bioactives from complete, whole food nutrients. Whole foods contain an interwoven “complex” of naturally balanced nutrients and helper-nutrients which act in complete harmony with our body and offer therapeutic properties that are key in any anti-aging, regenerative and protective skincare program.
- nutrients derived form whole foods are best as they mimic the natural occurrence of vitamins in food
- using specific methods of working with complete nutrients from whole foods and botanicals provides multiple biological effects that have scientifically been proven to be more potent than just one element, based upon the fact that nutrients can and do influence each other
- the combined presence of these high percentages of bioactive ingredients are successful in delivering optimal efficacy within a topically applied formula and are particularly key in addressing anti aging issues
- ingredients of this nature are referred to by Chinese and Western Integrative Doctors as ‘energized’ whereas processed nutrients and synthetic chemicals are described as ‘de-energized’
The small percentage of safe synthetics Sophyto use are approved by the UK Soil Association. The UK organic standards organization who certify Sophyto's formulas permit their use in organic products (Section 50.3.16) as does the new EU organic standard COSMOS. (App V) Requirements for toxicity and biodegradeability (Section 50.5.8) states one must be able to demonstrate that each chemically processed ingredient meets all of the following requirements:
- aquatic toxicity – the EC50 and LC50 for algae, crustaceans and fish must be at least 1mg/kg
- aerobic bio-degradability – must be ‘easily degradable’, as defined in OECD document 301A-F
- anaerobic bio-degradability – must be ‘easily degradable’ as defined in ISO 11734
- bio-accumulation – the log Pow value must be no more than 3.

good for pruritis (itching), anti-inflammatory
and soothing. Contains compounds used in
the treatment of acne and dermatitis.

Phytic Acid
Phytic acid
A nature identical, chelating ingredient. Found in
nature e.g. rice (Oreyza sativa). This is a material that
'mops up' any trace amounts of coloured metal ions
that may otherwise discolour, or spoil the product.
It also works with the preservative and helps to
weaken any contamination, or spoilage organism
that might be introduced into the product.

Pineapple Extract
Ananas sativus
A fresh extract made from organic pineapples.
This fresh fruit extract, specially designed by
Sophyto, carries the bioactive properties of
pineapple to our products. Pineapple is a natural
source of Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme that
digests proteins. Bromelain hydrolyzes proteins
and digests only the dead cells on the surface of
the skin, leaving living cells beneath intact.

Pomegranate Oil
Punica granatum
Organically grown seeds cold pressed.
An ancient fruit found in Western Asia, China and
Japan whose regenerative effects include: a boost in
restoration and repair of skin, evens skin tone, mops
up free radicals and helps with collagen production.

Potassium Sorbate
Potassium sorbate
This is the potassium salt of sorbic acid. Sophyto's
primary concern is the health and safety of those
using our products. With that in mind we therefore
must balance producing the most natural/organic
product with producing a microbially safe and stable
product. While sorbic acid is found in nature as of
yet is not produced from a plant source. For this reason
it has been necessary in some of the products to
add a synthetic antimicrobial.
A preservative allowed in both food and cosmetics
and permitted by organic certification bodies in cosmetics.

Propolis Extract
Propolis cera
Produced by bees as an antiseptic 'glue' in the hive it
has stong antibacterial properties. Produced by bees
kept by organic methods. (See beeswax)
Composed of resins, wax, oils, pollen and minerals
propolis has many beneficial properties for the skin
including anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, healing
and antioxidant.

Purple Cone Flower Extract
Echinacea purpurea
Extracted from organically grown plants.
used for the care of problem skin conditions, especially
where there is a risk of infection. Echinacea is
therefore used as a skin protectant. Recent studies
have shown that the extract can activate
macrophage activity, protect proteins from oxidative
stress and boost the skins immune system of defence.

Pyridoxine (Vitamin B6)
Pyridoxine
reported to control blemishes, especially premenstrual
outbreaks due to hormonal imbalances. By
metabolizing fats and fatty acids, vitamin B6 balances
oil production in the skin. Found in nature but
at present only produced synthetically.
